Manner of Taking Food - reviving the forgotten science & art of taking food

Important Tips for taking Food - By Vijayakumar Alagappan
the science & art of our great ancestor, ancient Siddha Masters
 http://www.iksacademy.com/

Food -Two Times in a Day (Nal Irumurai)
Food, along with air and water, is an essential need for human beings. In the food passage, food undergoes a series of processes and gets split into micro particles. This process is known as digestion. Primarily food provides energy to body. It promotes the growth of the body cells protecting the organism.

According to ancient Siddha Masters, a person should take 32 handfuls (kavalam) of food, that too two times a day. Hence the saying that"one time for a yogi, two times for a bogi (family man) and three times for Drohi.
The food taken two times a day by a bogi should be digested properly and the waste material should be excreted two times a day.
If the essence of food is absorbed and the waste materials are excreted twice on the same day, no toxicity will remain in the body. Consequently , no disease will afflict.
We can prevent the affliction of illnesses and can live a pleasant life if we adhere to the regulation of food, quantity, the six tastes, etc.

The Science & Art of Eating Food :

- Food must be taken for half of the stomach, with 1/4 of it for water and the remaining 1/4 empty

- Do not drink water atleast 30 minutes to 60 minutes before food, during and after 30 minutes eating
food (avoidance of drinking water or other beverages with meals is recommended to avoid diluting  hydrochloric acid in  stomach).

- Do not chew food with your mouth open (when chew food with your mouth open then you tend to gulp air and this air will dysfunction the saliva's efficacy. Saliva is a liquid secreted by the salivary glands, contains salivary amylase to digest starch(glucose 2) in your food when you chew food.

Digestion starts with chewing as salivary amylase begin breaking down food into its smallest basic units. After swallowing digestion continues in the stomach where hydrochloric acid  continue to break down food.

- Take 2 meals a day. In the afternoon and in the evening.

- Take rock salt and fresh ginger before taking food. This will clear the throat and sharpen the appetite.

The science and art of serving food of South India

1. Uppu - 2. Innipu palagaram, payasam - 3. Pachadi, porial, avail, varuval, urukai - 4. Apalam, vadai - 5. karuvapillai satham - 6. Annam

- When you take food, a tumbler of water should be places on the right side.

- One should not sit for taking food facing the north.

- If one passes wind when he takes food he must leave of eating. He must not take any food during the day.

- Sweet things should be taken first, salt and sour next; and pungent, bitter and curd with sour, astringent things like pickles / rasam at the end.

Principle of diet ~ It is a simple principle of diet in Siddha wisdom that vegetations that grow on a particular area, are capable of meeting dietary band medicinal needs of the local inhabitants. That is why so much emphasis was laid, and still being laid on 'regional diet'. If you change over to regional diet, there is no reason, why should you fall ill.

- Sweet things like payasam, dates, kesari should be eaten first and never at the end of dinner.

- Take hard substances in the beginning, soft things in the middle and the liquids towards the end of the meal.

- Do not run after taking a meal.

- Walking after dinner promotes life. It gives good health.

- After lunch, lie down on the left side for a short time. This helps for digestion. Surya Nadi works when you lie on the left side to ignite digestive fire.

The Science of Nap after Lunch - Mid Day Rest

- Immediately after taking food, it is highly injuries to bask in the sun, swim, ride or run, sing, sit by the fire side, fight, and practice physical exercise of asana, pranayama or study.

- Night meals should always be light and 3atleast hours before sleep (preferably before Sun set).

- Do not take curd at night. Curd should be sour in tropical diet and never be taken without the addition of some salt.

- Food, cohabitation, sleep, studying and walking in the street should not be indulged in at sunset.

- Food, evacuation of the bowels, cohabitation, sleep, taking medicine should be done when the breath is passing through the right nostril.

Diet as medicine ~ The purpose of taking food daily is to help the growth of the body, and to secure energy and immunity. If the above purposes are fulfilled, the soul functioning in the body will be in good condition. According to one of renowned Siddha master Thirumular if the physical body is destroyed, the soul will stop its function. In such condition 'meignanam' (the true wisdom) cannot be attained.

Miracles of Weekly Oil Bath

Reviving The Forgotten Science and Importance of Yennai kuliyal - (Science of Oil Bath) in Tropical Country like South India, Malaysia and Singapore. ~ IKS Academy http://www.iksacademy.com/

Why oil bath is given so much important from ancient time in South India by our ancestors ? How the oil bath can enhance your life from mind health to sexual health, from material success to spiritual success according to Siddha science system? For me most of our failures in life were derived from the ignorance of taking weekly oil bath. Teach your children today about the importance of oil bath. ~ Vijayakumar Alagappan

In South India people living in villages are having a traditional health habit from time immemorial of taking oil bath to improve and keep their good health. It is believed by the people of ancient time that oil is penetrating inside the body through the head, ears and feet, lowering body temperature and assisting an individual to endure the warm climate. But now it has been understood that applied oil dissolves the dusty, oily particles present in the skin pores which cause the body heat and strain the body organs, disorders in brain which in turn creates weaker kavasam (auric field). Later those impurities stuff will be removed by the application of herbal powder and warm water. This phenomena helps to make the skin to remove heat from inside of the body, which acts as a valve, to outside easily.

Unfortunately, today’s generation has given up the wise old ways that were handed down to us by our great ancestors, in an attempt to ape the West. Little do they realize that the western habits do not befit our climatic conditions, the hot and humid climate of tropical country causes increased body heat, fatigue of the brain and nerves, tiredness of the limbs.

Oil bath session at IKS's Super Kids Camp 2013
http://www.iksacademy.com/super-kids-camp---3-days.html

This oil bath practice will tremendously enhance our kavasam (auric shield) which in turn attract positive people and energies towards us and repel negative people and energies away from us. Kavasam is the foremost important energy for a successful life for everyone. No any spiritual practices like yoga, meditation, rituals, etc. will be fully fruitful without taking oil bath every week. In today's modern world most of the spiritual masters have failed to thought the important of oil bath in spiritual practices to their diciples to enhance and maintained their kavasam - the auric field . Any way it is being experienced by the people of South India that their habit has great tendency to clear the body heat until today.

What is Kavasam - Auric field ?

We are the microcosm of the Universe having energy similar to a magnet having North Pole and South Pole. The bio fields in the form of Kavasam - Auric energy posesess all the properties of attraction and repulsion. Regular practice of taking oil bath would enhance this energy field and make our physical and spirit's anatomy stronger. This wisdom is one of the greatest technique given by our great ancient mystics for a successful life with greater health, wealth, prosperity and enlightenment.

There are days prescribed in astrological texts for taking oil bath, so that the person will not become weak or tired after the oil bath.

Ennai Kuliyal : IKS TV Channel on You Tube

Apply oil  from head to toe and massage it. Leave it for 30 - 45 minutes. Then have warm head bath with Shiyaakai. Just imagine this regular simple weekly practice is going to solve most of  your health, wealth, relationship and spiritual problems in our life.

When is the best time to take oil bath ?

- Within 3 hours from Sun rise is most suitable time to take oil bath

- Taking oil bath on Saturday best suits the nature of the day influenced so, by Saturn.

- As per astrology, chathurthasi (4th tithi) is ideal for oil bath.

- In a week Saturday is ideal for oil bath for men and Friday for women.

- It is also said oil bath in the afternoon of Friday is good.

- One commonality in all these is that Saturn, the ayul kaarakan is ruling Chathurthasi (14th thithi) and Saturday.

- Friday is ruled by Indra which also benefits one with longevity.

- Generally oil bath can be taken on lunar days – Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Must avoid taking on solar days – Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

So the days chosen for oil bath are those ruled by planets that give long life, to offset the supposed fall in the balance of vital energies of the body.

There is a saying in Tamil
"Give the money to an oil man and save your doctor's bill".

How to prepare the oil ?

Commonly two varieties of oils such as coconut and sesame oils are used. But it is experienced by the people that coconut oil is more desirable than the other one. You can also mix three oil together - 50% of coconut oil + 40% sesame oil + 10% mustard oil. About 50 - 70ml of oil heated slightly higher then body temperature is taken in a palm size bowl. Strictly avoid taking oil in plastic bowl just before the application as they might affect the medicinal properties of oils. Start putting the oil on the top of your head, in small quantities at a time, and rub it on your hair and scalp. Than you continue massaging and slowly scratch without hurting it on the rest of the head, including the face, around eyes and nasal passages. Go on massage all over the body, giving importance especially to all hairy areas, from the ears, armpits, navel, groin, anal opening and through out whole body. The pores which are now soaked in oil will be easy to wash away the dirt that has clogged the skin later. You can soak with this oil on your body from 30 to 45 minutes.

Tips for oil bath : Must avoid taking on solar days – Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Avoid taking oil bath on your birth star ( Chitra Nakshatram born star should avoid taking oil bath on Chitra Nakshatra day, etc. ) or birth day ( Saturday born child should avoid Saturday oil bath, Wednesday born child should avoid Wednesday oil bath, etc. ) Avoid on Ammavasai, Pournami, Ashtami, Karthigai first day of the month and the tithi of late parents. For taking one oil bath for men 50-70ml of oil will do and for women it may be around 75ml for the entire body.

How to rinse your body after oil bath ?

Shiyaakai powder is the right choice for to wash the oil instead of shampoo.(there is no man made chemical which is equal in washing capacity like the shiyaakai. it's a nut plucked from the shiyaakai tree). Take 5 or 8 grams of the powder in a bowl and you have to make a wet paste of it by slowly adding drops of water. After making the paste, you have to take the requisite amount of the paste in the palm and rub it with both palms; add little water if needed and then apply it on the head only first. Rub it till you see froth. Very quickly wash it with copious amount of water as shikaakaai should not be allowed to remain on the body after it removed the oil, then like wise wash face next and then body and then legs with groin area included. Every time wash the shiyaakai froth quickly with good amount of water. You have to apply half of it on top of the head and the remaining half to be smeared all over the body till you reach the toes and can be allowed to soak for 10-15 minutes normally and not more then that is required. Now rinse the shiyaakai with oil stuff in hot water.

Why should one get tired after oil bath?
It is said as per Siddha Vaidyam that the vital energy in body such as vatham, kapham and pittham must be balanced for good health. Siddha maruthuvam treats a person on the assumption of disturbance to any one of the 5 vital elements in the body and making correctives to them. It is said when one takes oil bath, the balance of these is upset in the body. One can feel it also. Usually after an oil bath, one will feel sleepy. Avoid sleeping for atleast 3 to 4 hours from the time of oil bath.

Sleepiness is associated with planet Saturn in astrology. The day of Saturn is a day to take rest. It is ideal to have weekly holiday on Saturday and not on Sunday. (Sunday will make one fully vigorous and active like the Sun. The days were named only on the basis of the attributes of the planets that influence the day by rising as the first hora at sunrise)

Oil Bath on Deepavali

In the dark fortnight (wanning Moon) of Iypassi month (mid Oct - mid Nov), on the fourteenth day, early in the morning, oil should be applied on the body and bath taken in warm water. This is Deepavali bath. Take bath in warm water. On Deepvali day, Lakshmi lives in oil and Ganga lives
in warm water. This bath removes bad luck.

Oil bath on Saturday can appease Saniswaran and reduce His bad effects during His 7 1/2 testing period

General benefits of taking oil bath

1. It clears oily substances from the skin of total body and facilitate the same to transfer heat from its inside to outside. This will enhance your kavasam / auric field and strengthen your spirit's anatomy to attract prosperity and spiritual energy.

2. By giving healthy cold to our body we can have good appetite and feeling of taste.

3. Healthy cold prevailing in our body prevents many diseases like migraine, depression, stomach disorder, diabetic, sexual disorder, jaundice, cancer and other viral diseases.

In the area of actually improving general good health, the use of oil baths helps to keeps skin and it's pores open, supple and radiant, and in reality does help cool the body temperature by allowing perspiration to flow freely. Oil baths have a similar impact on keeping hair manageable and healthy, and prevents dry skin build-up on elbows, knees, feet and hands. In many instances circulatory issues can be aided greatly by the use of Indian bath oils and massage in helping blood flow to extremities. It is also a very common practice in southern India for a woman following childbirth to partake of oil baths to calm strained muscles, and it is even believed to improve the amount of a nursing mother's breast milk.

Perhaps the greatest benefit attributable to those who use Indian bath oils lies in the tremendous benefit associated with the reduction of stress. The deep muscle massage combined with healing herbs and a warm bath provide an excellent source of relaxation, lowering blood pressure and enabling healthy heart rhythms. This aspect of using Indian bath oils also has a positive impact upon the ability to sleep soundly, allowing an individual to gain deep and restorative sleep patterns that may otherwise be beyond reach. This benefit of Indian bath oils is especially useful in those with ill health or suffering from chronic medical conditions.

General observations about oil bath

- avoid using hot/warm water bath if you have nerves problems .
- people above the age of 65-70 may avoid taking oil bath
- don't sleep during the day after taking oil bath. sleep will further lower the body temperature and you may get sick(but not necessarily).
- after taking bath, dry the hair in the open sun(for a few minutes) if possible or under the fan. do this especially if you have long hair and ensure that water is removed from hair and scalp.( i have crew cut but still i towel and thrash the hair well with hand standing under the fan)
- people having disc wear problem in their vertebra or having worn disc in the neck should not take oil bath. This will increase the pain further.

I wish to say that we are responsible to pass this true art of living to coming generation ~ share with your friends and family to revive this forgotten wisdom of our culture and evolve together for the establishment of the Golden Age ~ Vijayakumar Alagappan

A banana a day keeps the doctor away!

Miracles of Banana Fruit - By Vijayakumar Alagappan
View Image

BANANAS – Some Interesting Facts
After reading this, you’ll never look at a banana in the same way again.
Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber.
A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.
But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS: Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Never put your banana in the refrigerator!!!
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a “cooling” fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In

Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body’s water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!
Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, “A banana a day keeps the doctor away!

Science and Art of Slow Walking

Science & Art of Slow Walk – by Vijayakumar Alagappan

When i said that I am going to give a public talk on walking, many people will said, 'what! a talk on walking? Even a kid knows how to walk. What are you going to tell us new?'

Walking is a good excercise both for the mind and as well as for the body. Walking can be undertaken by almost all of us. But there are few important things to know and observe while walking.

Why regular walking ?
The organs of your body have their sensory touches at the bottom of your foot. God created our body so well that of even this. He made us walk so that we will always be pressing this pressure points and thus keeping these organs activated at all times. But the walking should be slow (not brisk walk as advised by most of the modern doctors).

Why slow walking ?
With slow walking, one can control the slowly acting factor. The walking increases blood circulation in the knee and calf regions of the feet. According to engineering terminology, the heart is a pump with non-return valves.

The other place where non-return valves are located in the body are in the veins of the calfs. Technically speaking the non-return valve in each of the calf should be designated as a heart. The one heart in the chest is not under our control (yogis and yoginis may control them, but not ordinary people). But the other two “hearts” in the calfs can be controlled by you – it is through walking.

How to start & when to walk ?
The best time for daily slow walk practices are two hours before Sun rise and Sun set. To start with, it can be only be for 20 minutes. Using watch, you should walk for 10 minutes away from your home. Then you should walk back to your home. Gradually, the walking time should be increased to 45 minutes.

Acu Pressure Points

I hope, today`s modern doctors will help to spread this priceless ancient knowledge in tropical climate countries.

No Brisk Walk Especially If You Are Living in Tropical Climate

Siddha Vaidhiyam - the most ancient medical system

Siddha system is the most ancient of all medical systems. The origination of this civilization dates back to 12000 years before christ. Tamil language is said to be the most ancient language as per the research work done in manuscripts. The other south-indian languages like Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada are derived from Tamil language only. The Tamil Nadu which existed several millions of years ago was a vast continent called Lemuria or Kumari kandam. The History reveals that this vast land was eroded and submerged into the sea 15000 years ago. As a result the Tamil Nadu which exist today is only a part of that huge continent. According to the books like “History of creation” and “Pre degree of man” written by Hackal, the submerged Tamil Land was the the first place occupied by mankind who were well civilized. Tamil Nadu is considered as the home of Siddhars from where this premordial civilization and medical system evolved. This system was pre-vedic and pre-aryan. It is only between 1200B.C and 700B.C. when Aryan invaded India and origination of Sanskrit and other north indian languages occured.

The excavations done in Harappa and Mohenjo-daro also reveals the existence of a civilization and medical system. The excavatory findings consisted of some siddha medicines and idols of Lord Natarajan which was worshipped as per Saiva Siddhantam which is a part of this ancient civilization. Also some vessels which were found from these places are said to be the ancient apparatus used to prepare Siddha drugs.

Hence, Siddha system or “Siddham” is the way of life which is the most ancient of all medical systems.

Years passed and this system got confined in the present Tamil Nadu, in hands of small groups of Traditional vaidhyars or practitioners. They treated the Royal kings and even provided kayakarpa treatment. Some traditional practitioners are teaching this science to their children but they have kept it confined within their families only. The secrets of preparing medicines, mode of treatment and the precious books as well as the Siddha literatures have been kept hidden by them. Even today these missing links or hidden secrets are said to be preserved in such families where this traditional system is practiced. They can’t be blamed completely for supressing these secrets. This is because of their fear of disclosing these secrets that may get misused or it may reach in the wrong hands. Hence, this medical system never flourished.

But this science was converted into a new form in Sanskrit by the Aryans and named Ayurveda. With independence, the other medical systems extended to each nuke and corner of the country.
